Das Helmholtz Institute Mainz (HIM) sucht engagierte Kandidaten für eine PhD-Position (alle Geschlechter) im Bereich der experimentellen Hadron-Physik. Im Rahmen des PRIMA-Projekts werden ab dem 18. Juli 2025 bedeutende Messungen des Pion-Übergangsformfaktors durchgeführt. Diese Forschungsstelle ist an der Verbindung zwischen der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz und dem GSI Helmholtz-Zentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt angesiedelt, das eng mit der neuen FAIR-Anlage (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) verknüpft ist, einem der größten Forschungsprojekte weltweit.
In dieser Teilzeitstelle (65%) übernehmen Sie vielfältige Aufgaben. Dazu gehört die Entwicklung eines detaillierten Verständnisses der experimentellen Anordnung durch Simulationen, die Beteiligung an den Datenerfassungs-Kampagnen und die Einrichtung eines Analyse-Software-Frameworks. Des Weiteren werden Sie in die Datenanalyse eingebunden und unterstützen Bachelor- und Masterstudenten.
Ihr Profil umfasst ein Masterstudium oder einen gleichwertigen Abschluss in experimenteller Kernphysik sowie gute Kommunikationsfähigkeiten in Englisch. Erfahrungen in der Kern-, Hadron- oder Teilchenphysik sowie Kenntnisse in der Softwareentwicklung für Datenerfassung und -analyse wären von Vorteil.
Die Position ist auf 36 Monate befristet, und die Vergütung orientiert sich am Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst (TVöD). Frauen sind besonders eingeladen, sich zu bewerben, und schwerbehinderte Personen erhalten bei gleicher Qualifikation den Vorzug.

The experimental setup uses the backward endcap of the PANDA electromagnetic calorimeter. The calorimeter is installed at the three-spectrometer facility A1 of the electron accelerator MAMI in Mainz. The measurement yields an important input for the calculation of theoretical corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g-2).Your Responsibilities:
develop a detailed understanding of the experimental setup by running simulations
participate in the experiment data taking campaigns of the PRIMA experiment at the MAMI accelerator
set up an analysis software framework
work on the analysis of the experimental data
contribute to the supervision of Bachelor and Master students.
Your profile:
a M.Sc. or equivalent degree in experimental nuclear physics
and good communication skills in English (both verbal and written).
Experience in the field of nuclear, hadron or particle physics
knowledge in software development for data acquisition, experiment control, and data analysis are desirable.
